10 days in New Jersey – Sounds like the name of a pop culture film where a bunch of teens get lost, sedated, beaten and escape in a fast car from the 70′s to Vermont. Anyhow, my 10 days in New Jersey were anything but a movie, more like a reality check, from a few different angles – laughter, excitement, tears, disappointment, sorrow, reflection and many goodbyes, some hopeful and some permanent. 10 days ago I started the process of saying goodbye to my grandmother a young 94 years old whom passed on October 19th from old age. A mind and body tired from so many decades and so many experiences. From 1916 to 2010 – that is one hell of life and her eyes saw a ton. I sit here in Manayunk, a small yuppie berg just west of Philadelphia in SAXBY’s coffee shop, a place and town that is all to familiar, many years spent here sipping coffee, pedaling bikes and chatting about life. What a perfect place to end my journey. A journey that is new to me – saying goodbye to one of the most important people in my 36 years of life. Something so permanent. The 10 days started off in Newton, PA, a place that is now dear to my heart, the resting place for both my grandparents. I will be back there to visit, it is only right and important. From there I ventured to Northern New Jersey to Boonton, New Jersey where [...]

Perhaps in today day and age with tons of concrete skate parks and pre-made, predetermined skate spots the young have not learned this but it is something that as a skateboarder one does and often times without even knowing it. The ability to look at a concrete ledge and recognize the potential, staring at a loading dock at 40mph from the back seat of a moving car and rejoicing at a drainage ditch as if the holly grail was just stumbled upon – with or without board the joy and emotion of coming up upon a new, unrecognized skate spot with tons of potential (even without) is something of beauty. As a cyclist I have brought that thought process over to this lycra clad sport and look at certain aspects of terrain with the same excitement be it on a road bike, mountain bike or cyclocross bike. I do however think it translates a bit more for me to the cyclocross bike – it is pure, it is expressive and there is some sense of style to racing and riding cx. I went home and pieced together a map from Google maps and did some course layout, this could be an awesome venue. I am currently in Northern New Jersey, my home town nestled away 30 miles from Manhatten. A hustle [...]
