This document is going around and I picked it up from Twitter about tire width and what tires people have right now, if they will have to buy new tires, cost associated with buying new tires, category, name and license number So it got me thinking about the tires, I really didn’t pay much attention because I was not going to race an UCI elite stuff this season but now I am thinking about it sooooooooo…… The tire width rule for cyclo-cross has been changed this year by the UCI as all of us cyclocross junkies already know. I am still curious why they chose 33MM? Most tires are 32′s or 34′s with not a lot of 35′s and or 33′s. I quickly looked up the tire size choices for the popular tubular tires Challenge Grifos –
Read MoreNo not the drug, crack is what happened to me yesterday at the Schoolyard Cross race at the Boulder rez. It has been a long time since I really bonked or cracked and I suppose that is a good thing because I can’t remember the last time I had a full on body malfunction like the one that comes with a full crack. I am sure there were days where the legs, lungs and brain just were not firing on all cylinders and it contributed to some serious pain and sort of crackage but those days do not compare to the real thing. I have been lucky and can say that I have only had a full on bonk a few times. In fact, I can’t say the last time I felt dizzy, naucues, had zero power, pain and cramping and just generally out of my mind at least from cycling. The race yesterday was 70+ degrees, blistering sun and a super fast and punishing course. I had good preparation – ate well, decent warm up and preloaded with gels, sports drinks and the like. With all that said it still was not enough. What could have caused? Stress? Not really training? Not having raced in a few weeks? The heat? Riding over the limit? Not sure, but I do know that at one point I was riding really hard, you had to, the course made it such. There were some recovery sections but that was followed by full gas [...]
Read MorePhoto: Denis Smith Last weekend I raced Beacon Cyclocross race for the first time in many years. I came to this race on some pretty bad terms, but I was there to race none-the-less even if my head was not into it. This year boasted the same great course and some fantastic east coast fall weather which I was very excited to taste over the course of my 10 day berevement tour. Homebasing it at my folks house in Northern New Jersey I filled up the Ford Focus rental and zoomed south to Bridgeton some 3 hours away. Beacon could have been a nice reunion of sorts but I was really not feeling it so I keep to myself and talked to some folks as they recognized me but I did not seek out anyone nor did I look for any attention. My brain, body and soul had been through a lot in the past week and I was just there to soak up something familiar and peddle the bike on one of my favorite cyclocross courses to date. Wade Hess is the promoter and course designer and by golly he has one awesome race course, not overly technical but fast, flowing and full of character. I pinned on a number for the M35+ elite race and lined up at the back, the start is long and open making for some quick ground to be made up fast. Passing riders is a breeze, that is if you have the umph [...]
